If you are considering performing DIY garage door spring repair on your roll up garage door, it is important that you understand what purpose those springs serve. Roll up garage doors are equipped with torsion springs that are secured to a drum on one end and the end plate on the other end. The door remains balanced because of these springs and is able to easily roll up on the drums.

Keep in mind that torsion springs are wound up so they happen to be under extreme tension, which makes very dangerous. Therefore, you should careful when adjusting or replacing roll up garage door springs. Improper garage door spring installation or removal can prove to be a danger to both your life and property, so it is best to hire a professional.

Step #1: Use winding bars to adjust torsion springs

You should begin by clamping locking pliers to the torsion spring so that tension on the cable is maintained. Some torsion springs have a straight line drawn across their length. If a line is not present, a piece of chalk should be used to draw one. The number of turns on a torsion spring is indicated by this line. Two winding bars should be inserted into the winding cone, all the way into it. The torsion springs should then be winded in an upward direction, one-fourth turn each time. The torsion springs tail should point in the direction you are winding it in.

Warning: Only winding bars should be used for this. The use of any other tools like screwdrivers should be avoided. The winding bars should be inserted all the way in.

Each spring should be secured on the winding cone using the set screws. Once set screws make contact with the tube, you should turn them from three-fourth to a single full turn. Even if your roll up garage door has two torsion springs, you should wind them the same number of turns. Once the spring(s) have been adjusted, the locking pliers can be removed.

Step #2: The door function should be carefully tested

The garage door should be unlocked and propped nearly halfway open once it has been rolled up.

Warning: Your roller garage door may roll down if the back hangers are weak or the tracks are not properly aligned.

The horizontal tracks of a roll up garage door should be parallel to its both sides. Check the lag screws and securely fasten if they need to be. When you roll up your garage door nearly halfway open, make sure that its rollers only protrude out of the top of bracket approximately half an inch. You may have to adjust the rear track hanger, so make sure you roll your garage door down completely before doing.

Conclusion

Adjusting the spring tension is a part of roll up garage door spring repair. However, it is not a convenient task and as mentioned, it can prove to be quite dangerous too. So, even though you now know how to adjust the spring tension on a roll up garage door, it recommended that you contact a garage door professional.
